The history of "Kortowo" dates back to the 50s when a group of students decided to set up a Polish folk dance group, to cultivate the traditions and folklore of Poland. The university, among others remains greatest patron.
Polish Folk Traditions
Kortowo is a group of folklore dancers and musicians from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, a city on the Lyna River in northeastern Poland. The group draws its inspiration from Polish folk traditions, faithfully reproducing the dances, songs and ceremonies of its country. Its history dates back to the 1950s when a group of students decided to form a dance group to cultivate the traditions and folklore of Poland.
The repertoire of Korowo is rich and varied. The group presents national dances such as the Polonez, the Mazur, the Kujawiak and the Oberek. Its members also perform songs and dances from nearly all Poland's regions including Warmia, Kurpie Zielone, Lublin, Kujawy, Rzeszow, Krakow, Podhale, Łowicz, Opoczno and Śląsk. The dances are performed in original, colorful costumes that heighten the interest of their audience. Kortowo has won recognition at numerous folklore festivals in its country and abroad. The group has repeatedly been honored and rewarded for its artistic performances.
